This round violet-blue iolite offers a budget-friendly alternative to blue sapphire or tanzanite while presenting an intriguing color shift all its own. Its natural color and relative durability make it an appealing option for all types of jewelry designs.
Iolite is the gem name for cordierite, a silicate of aluminum and magnesium. Its name comes from the Greek work "ios," meaning violet. SImilar to tanzanite in color, but more affordable, this gemstone gets its color primarily from iron. Most iolite is found in gravel beds in the form of water-worn pebbles.
Due to pleochroism or dichroism phenomena, iolite displays different colors when viewed from different angles. Iolite can appear almost clear in one orientation, then present a deep purple color in another orientation. Because iolite typically has very few inclusions, it is ideal for faceting and displays clear, bright color.
Round-cut gemstones are highly popular and the most commonly available. Rio round gemstones are calibrated for size and hand inspected to ensure maximum attractiveness.

I ordered 3mm stones and the actual size is about 2.5mm. I wouldn’t mind necessarily, but it would have been good to know in advance. The stones weren’t merchandised as being odd sizes. The stones themselves are lovely, just significantly smaller than advertised.

The stones were a bit lighter in color than the picture, but I'm new at the gem game so it was probably a bit of unrealistic expectations as well. Overall great stones, I just put them in a setting today
